Use: Impressive wide-spreading Florida native shade tree for larger properties. Collected specimens add incredible character and age to gardens. These treasured trees are extremely durable and will outlive you. They are virtual nurseries for all sorts of wildlife including birds, mammals, reptiles and insects, as well as many species of epiphytic plants including orchids, bromeliads and ferns.
Characteristics: Live Oaks are the largest durable shade trees here in Florida. They are characterized by their spreading structure of branches and rough bark. Live Oaks are semi-deciduous, in other words, they are less full in the winter than in the summer. As they age, the canopy expands and becomes more dense and shadier; only plants adapted to low light will thrive beneath the mature Oak canopy.
Trimming: Remove crossed branches and dead wood every few years. Trees have a very heavy leaf and flower drop in early spring. The leaves make great mulch, and can be moved around the property; however, they also can stain cars and pavement surfaces.
Fertilization: Fertilize in March, June, and October with a time released granular fertilizer to promote overall health and faster growth. Supplemental water also increases growth rate.
