Ilex Nellie R. Stevens Nellie Stevens Holly

Characteristics: Nellies are statuesque, conically shaped trees, usually full to the base, which make beautiful accent pieces in the landscape. Because of their pyramidal shape, they add formality and structure. Female trees will bear red berries yearly, as long as a male tree is nearby to pollinate.
Trimming: Nellies naturally grow in a conical shape. They will flush with new growth in the spring so just before this happens is the best time to trim. Best practice is to use a manual hedge shearer to give a good 'haircut' all the way around. Hand prune stragglers throughout the year.

Fertilization: Fertilize in March, June and October with a well balanced, time released granular fertilizer.
